The FTC's New Rules on Fake Reviews (2024+)

Buying fake positive reviews is now explicitly illegal and carries massive fines. Here's what's allowed.

By Review Remover Editorial Team

The FTC's Rule on Consumer Reviews and Testimonials (effective October 2024) prohibits: buying fake reviews, employee/insider reviews without disclosure, paying for review removal of legitimate negative reviews, review hijacking, and suppressing negative reviews through deceptive means.

Penalties reach $51,744 per violation. Each fake review can be counted as a separate violation. Multi-million dollar fines are no longer theoretical.

What's still allowed: requesting honest reviews from real customers, responding publicly, and disputing reviews that violate platform terms of service.
